I'm not really a fan of the Planet of the Apes movies.. the last one wasn't fantastic and the originals, whilst having funky monkey suits for the year, weren't that exciting.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes kept my attention though. The storyline is interesting - a baby chimp born of a lab-monkey who'd been tested with a drug to cure Alzheimers, then brought up by the scientist in secret in his home.

I won't give the entire plot away but it cleverly done and you're able to suspend belief (in fact I wouldn't be surprised in some testing like this happened at some point, if it's no already) and you watch the Chimp grow and change over a period of years.

The further into the film you get the more dramatic the changes to the chimp (Ceasar) are until you almost forget he's a monkey because his mannerisms are so human, and that in turn makes the entire thing disturbing and (at times) uncomfortable.

To be honest, I ended up on the Ape's side - the plot is written in such a way that you can see just why they rise up and I personally wouldn't have blamed them.

Well done on this film, really enjoyed it!

Is this a remake of the old Rise of the Planets of the Apes?

I know they had the remake of Planet of the Apes a couple years ago with Mark Wahlberg playing the Charlton Heston part.

Don't think there was a Rise of the Planet of the Apes, was there?

I wasn't impressed with the Mark Wahlberg remake. This one, however, kept my interest and definitely generated sympathy for the apes.

I asked Gary.. he said while there are some things that are similar, Rise is a much better film and obviously brought in more up-to-date concepts.
